Quiet Man Dave Prize - Longlist

I'm really delighted to have two stories on the longlist for this international flash competition. The Quiet Man Dave Prize was set up, in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University, to honour the life of Dave Murray, a much-loved writer, blogger and theatre critic with a passion for flash fiction. This is its first year.

I haven't entered a contest for ages, needing to hoard work in order to keep up, as a flash writer, with the word count of an MA programme more attuned to writers of longer forms. Also in recent times I've tended to write stories in the 600-900 word zone, which is too long for most flash fiction contests. The few times I have subbed, I've focussed on getting rejected by my favourite literary journals instead.

This is the loveliest way to break that pattern. I'm very grateful to the judges, and honoured to be included in this list.
